Mary Alice (Watts) Budge

I retired in 1996 from Youngstown State University in Ohio, where I was a member of the English department for nearly 30 years, earning the rank of professor.  Though an English professor, I often taught in interdisciplinary programs: women’s studies, peace and conflict studies, film studies and medical humanities. I earned a Ph.D. in English literature from State University of New York at Buffalo. My undergraduate degree is from Drew University.

I’m married to John F. Greenman, a retired newspaper publisher, who is now on the faculty at the University of Georgia. We have been happily married for 30 years.  We have two sons, Michael and David, and two grandsons. (The name, Budge, is from my first marriage, which ended in divorce.)

Today, I’m a community volunteer in Columbus, Georgia, working on behalf of many causes.

I’m best known in Columbus for my work with the libraries. I helped transform the Columbus Public Library as a member of the Columbus and regional library boards and president of Friends of Libraries. With my husband, I endowed a Friends library store and organized many author visits, lectures and book discussions.

I’ve been honored several times for my work on behalf of libraries in Georgia. Most recently, I received the 2008 Governor's Award in the Humanities. The award is for service and dedication to history, literature and heritage.

I’m also involved with Georgia’s State Theater, called the Springer Opera House. I’m a member of the board and chair its education committee, where I’m working with a team of scholars to archive a collection of Springer materials that date back to its founding in 1871.

I also serve on the steering committee of Friends of Art at Columbus State University and have served on the boards of Historic Columbus Foundation, Girls Inc. and the Metro Columbus Urban League.

Besides the Governor’s Award in the Humanities, I’ve been honored by the Girl Scouts, Columbus Area Library Association and the National League of American Pen Women.

I’m also proud of my work as a peace activist, first against the Vietnam War, now the War in Iraq.
