Thomas J. Safford

It’s been a long time.  I am sorry I won’t be attending the reunion.   Here’s what’s been happening in my life since graduation.  I joined the Air Force in 1959 and was stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, WA.  I worked on 707 refueling airplanes till my discharge in 1963.  I then came back to N. Y. and went to work for Pan Am Airlines at JFK.  In 1967, I transferred to San Francisco where I worked in aircraft and cargo handling maintenance.  While there, I raced sports cars at tracks like Laguna Seca, Sears Point (Infinion) and others.  I had a Triumph factory sponsorship for a few years.

Attending a local college, I met my wife to be, Jean, and when she bought me a set of race tires for my birthday, I knew we had to marry [1970].  We’ve been married 37 years now with 2 children, a son age 28 and a daughter age 26.  Both have college degrees and are married.  No grandchildren yet.

In 1974, I quit Pan Am and we moved to Spokane, WA, where I worked as an auto/truck mechanic.  In 1976, I bought an auto repair shop in Chewelah, WA.  In 1983, I joined the Washington Air National Guard and in 1986, when offered a technician’s job, I accepted and sold my shop.  We then moved back to the Spokane area.  Twenty five years after leaving the Air Force, I was back in.  I retired in 2001.

Since retiring, I’ve been restoring British sports cars.  The last was a 1963 Jaguar XKE.  My latest project is a 1957 Jag MK 1 sedan street rod {dare to be different}.  Jean is a nationally licensed show rabbit judge and travels the west coast and Canada judging.  She got hooked doing 4-H with the kids.  We had horses for a while but sold them when local home building reduced the riding area available.  Life is good!  I wish you all well.
