Shortly after graduating Tottenville High, I enlisted in the Navy. At that time people signing up before their eighteenth birthday were released the day before they were twenty-one. I finished my tour of duty in the early fall of 1961 and immediately enrolled in the Business Program at Wagner College. In my second year at Wagner I met my wife, Carole, who was a freshman in the nursing program there. She had also graduated from Tottenville High but was four years behind our class. In September 1963 we married. We had three children, David (1964), Daniel (1965) and Kara (1967. Carole tended the home-front while I worked at S.S.Whites during the day and studied to complete my program at Wagner in the evenings, eventually earning an MBA. We lived in Tottenville for a while but eventually moved to Fanwood, NJ when I took an industrial engineering position with J.Wiss and Sons a manufacturer of scissor and shears. When Wiss was acquired by Cooper Tools in 1976, I accepted a position at Cooper’s headquarters in Raleigh NC. I remained in Raleigh at Cooper Tools until my retirement in 1998 having held several management positions in Manufacturing, Marketing, Finance and Business Development. After my retirement, I established and operated a small business consulting company primarily to help transition me from everyday work to total retirement. In 2003 we purchased a winter home at The Villages in Florida where we now enjoy the great weather, golf, dining, dancing and many other activities from November through March. During the Spring and Fall we are enjoying living in Raleigh and during most of the Summer we travel through New England where each of our three children are now living. More important, it also gives us a chance to visit with our five grandchildren. Our hobbies and other interests are varied. Carole bikes and swims almost every day, especially when we are at The Villages. She attends yoga classes several times each week. She also spends considerable time as a self-appointed purchasing agent for the grandchildren. I have been training and running for many years having completed more than 50 marathons, as well as completing more than ten 100 mile endurance trail races, fifteen 50 mile races and over 150 shorter races. I continue to train for the long races but completions are now becoming more difficult for some reason. I also enjoy collecting antique bottles many of which are from old Staten Island pharmacies and breweries. Together we are enjoying cruises and other travel (often with Tottenville High classmates), biking, kayaking, cooking, hiking, golf, dining and dancing. Both Carole and I look forward to the class reunion and the opportunity to reconnect with classmates. It will be great to spend time catching up and reminiscing about the great times we had during those wonderful years at Tottenville High. |
