Barbara N. (Gilbert) Walsh

Cannot believe I am 70 years old and writing a bio...!!!

After graduating from THS in June 1956, I enrolled at the University of Michigan.   I graduated from college in June 1960 with a BS in Nursing.  One week later I married Bill Neumann who had just graduated from U of M Medical School. We then headed off to a year of internship at Minneapolis General Hospital.  Our first son was born in Minneapolis in June 1961.  We spent the next two years on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  My husband was in the Public Health Service.  Our daughter was born three weeks before we left the Reservation to move back to Minneapolis for a five year residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at U. of Minnesota.  We had two more boys during residency years.  At the end of the residency, we moved to New Orleans for six months, where Bill did a fellowship in Hand Surgery.  Finally, Bill went into Private Practice in Marquette, Michigan.  I worked off and on during those years, doing Public Health Nursing, office nursing and teaching Jacki Sorenson's Aerobic Dancing and Workouts.  Since Marquette was in "snow country", we all did a lot of cross-country and downhill skiing.

My husband died in March 1991, just eight days after our first grandchild was born.  A tough time.

I re-married in 1994 and now live in the Rogue River Valley in Southern Oregon.  I still have my "camp" in Marquette, where I try to spend some time every summer.  I have seven children and ten grandchildren.  I volunteer at a Rescue Nursery, for neglected and abused children, and stay active doing aerobics, skiing and tap dancing.  Life is good.
