The Staten Island Hotel

By Lee Shake, THS '57

When Carol and I went to Staten Island last June, we went on-line and made reservations at The Staten Island Hotel. I practically learned to drive a car on Manhattan, but I didn't want to have to worry about parking there, on this trip, so we wanted to stay on Staten Island fairly close to the ferry and use public transportation. I had been informed before we went on the trip that the Staten Island Hotel had originally been a Holiday Inn Hotel and had changed ownership.

When we got there and checked in, we discovered that the lobby was being refurbished and the same was true of the restaurant. While the lobby was open for business, the restaurant was closed, although room service was operating with almost a full restaurant menu. We did order a dinner and a breakfast via room service and the food was served hot and it was delicious. The bell-boy nearly left the room before I could tip him!

Our room faced South. It afforded a nice night-time view of Staten Island lit up at night. Our room was pretty typical for a Holiday Inn type establishment. It was bright and clean, and fairly large. The hotel staff was helpful and friendly. The A/C was adequate and pretty quiet.

Getting from the Staten Island Hotel to the ferry is a snap. A bus stops on the corner near the hotel and the ride to the ferry terminal is about 15 minutes. The bus ride back from the ferry is even quicker.

The hotel is in a crowded neighborhood, but parking is available behind the hotel. They have a 4-wheeled baggage cart that you can use to take your luggage from your parked car to the hotel lobby, or you can unload your luggage at the lobby (front) door. We thought the prices were quite reasonable.

Right across the street from the Hotel is a grocery store. They sell the odds and ends that you might have forgotten to bring with you.

I can recommend this establishment, and will use it again if we ever find ourselves on the Island again, even though we arrived when they were in the midst of construction changes.  Just thought you'd like to know.
